Code Fearless

2008-07-12

The Monticello Joint Fire District received the nation's first Code Fearless Award, given by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation.

From across the nation, firefighters and the families of firefighters who lost their lives gathered at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan for the presentation.

MFD received this award for its use and support of the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives. Over the past year and a half, members have put these initiatives on place to stop firefighter fatalities and reduce the possibility of injuries. For information about the initiatives, visit www.everyonegoeshome.com.

"As firefighters, we must have the courage to face a multitude of risks in order to save lives and protect communities. But it takes a different type of courage to do the right thing to save the life of a firefighter, changing the attitude that firefighter deaths are a normal and acceptable outcome."
